An international team of authorities draw upon their expertise to provide practical evidence-based guidance to improve the care of our patients throughout the world.

 

The obstetric section has several chapters addressing the evolving roles of non-invasive and invasive prenatal screening and diagnosis. Haematologic problems can be especially challenging and are addressed both medically and with interventional ultrasound. The role of caesarean delivery continues to be controversial and is well elucidated by need for appropriate categorisation and the specific topic of IUGR. Neonatology is an integral component of perinatal medicine and provides an important perspective to obstetric management highlighted for the late preterm infant. The contemporary management of HIV is described as well as the importance of obtaining an appropriate obstetric history—an essential and sometimes neglected dimension of obstetric care.

 

The gynaecologic section addresses the scope of issues in the field starting with ethical dimensions which are increasingly important. Several chapters deal with the current role of estrogen usage in specific clinical areas the physician must apply current evidence. Updates are provided on the commonplace and important topics of contraception, endometriosis, premenstrual syndrome, and infection as well as the challenging topic of post-coital cystitis. The current role of robotic surgery is especially controversial and is lucidly addressed.
